Malaysian PM Pledges to Boost Trade, Announces $200M Halal Meat Deal with Pakistan

Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim today reaffirmed his country’s firm commitment to significantly boost trade and investment ties with Pakistan following a high-level meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in Putrajaya.

The most prominent announcement from the bilateral talks was Malaysia’s decision to establish a $200 million import quota for Halal meat from Pakistan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hailed the move as a “welcome step” and assured that Pakistan would make every effort to meet all Malaysian Halal certification and quality standards to achieve and surpass the target.

The two leaders, who held “highly constructive and fruitful” discussions, also oversaw the signing of six bilateral accords/MoUs aimed at deepening cooperation in key areas:

  • Halal Certification
  • Education and Diplomatic Training
  • Tourism
  • Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
  • Anti-Corruption Efforts

During a joint press conference, PM Anwar Ibrahim stressed the joint aspiration to further enhance collaboration, particularly in emerging sectors. Both nations agreed to explore new avenues for investment and joint ventures in fields such as:

  • Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Digital Economy and Telecommunications
  • Green Energy
  • Automotive and Electronic Manufacturing
  • Agriculture (value-addition)

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought to leverage Malaysia’s experience in technology and AI and encouraged Malaysian companies to invest in Pakistan, describing it as a “strategic gateway to vast regional and global markets.”

The leaders also expressed satisfaction with the progress in Pakistan’s rice exports to Malaysia, which have already exceeded the agreed quota, and discussed regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East. The visit is set to provide a new impetus to the long-standing strategic partnership between Pakistan and Malaysia.
